I have a kindergartender in a foreign country (she’s bilingual) and needed to teach English language skills in addition to her home country language. I have purchased several different types of workbooks and found this to be the best of them. This isn’t about doing random fun things or puzzles – I can see the thought and care that went into each of the learning sections. English is a hard language but this presents it in a way that is both fun, a challenge, and gives a sense of accomplishment. I compare this to several other books I have where there are a lot of pretty colored pictures or puzzles but not as much learning to be had. I really feel that when my 6 year old completed this, she truly learned and increased her language mastery.
I’ve gone on to buy the 1st and 2nd grade versions. It really is important to look at the workbooks before you buy them – the ones with the color images everywhere often aren’t the best for learning and end up being a waste of time. This series really feels like it was created by educators with the sole purpose of actually educating rather than amusing a kindergardener. The book is also consistent across with a cast of characters who have real life challenges that kids get to problem solve.
In all, highly recommended. The book is big and has quite a bit of subjects to cover and I think it is a great general complement when combined with books that focus on particular subjects. This is a good starting place to determine where your child is weakest so you know which topics to focus on in more depth.
